Speed Camera Ticket in Ontario: What You Need to Know

Understand speeding camera tickets in Ontario.

As of November 14, 2025, Ontario has repealed the use of Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras under the Highway Traffic Act. Municipalities are no longer permitted to issue new speed camera tickets.

However, tickets issued before that date remain valid and must still be paid or disputed by the deadline listed on the notice.

If you received a speed camera ticket prior to the repeal, here’s what you need to know about how these tickets work and your options under the Provincial Offences Act.

How Speed Cameras Worked in Ontario

Automated Speed Enforcement systems used radar or laser technology to measure vehicle speed in designated areas such as:

  • School zones

  • Community safety zones

  • Residential neighbourhoods

When a vehicle exceeded the posted speed limit:

  • A photo of the licence plate was captured

  • The speed, date, and time were recorded

  • A ticket was mailed to the registered vehicle owner

Because these tickets were issued to the vehicle owner, not the driver, they did not carry demerit points.

Penalties for Speed Camera Tickets

Speed camera tickets:

  • Do not add demerit points

  • Do not affect your driver’s licence status

  • Result in a monetary fine only

Fines were calculated per kilometre over the speed limit and could be higher in community safety zones.

Unpaid fines could affect licence plate renewal.

If you’ve been charged with speeding by an officer (not a camera), visit our Toronto & GTA Speeding Ticket defence page to see how we handle these cases.

Can You Still Dispute a Speed Camera Ticket?

Yes — if the ticket was issued before November 14, 2025.

Under the Provincial Offences Act, you may:

  • Pay the ticket (resulting in a conviction as registered owner)

  • Request an Early Resolution meeting

  • Request a trial

The evidence typically includes photographic images and system records.

Important Distinction

This repeal applies to automated speed enforcement cameras only. Traditional speeding tickets issued by police officers continue to be enforced across Ontario.

If you received a roadside speeding ticket, see our Speeding Ticket in Toronto & GTA page for information about demerit points and court options.

Final Thoughts

Although Ontario has repealed automated speed enforcement, previously issued tickets remain enforceable. If you have received one, it is important to review the deadline and decide how you wish to proceed.
