Demerit points fall off after two years; the conviction stays on insurers’ radar for three. Hit 15 points on a full G licence and a 30-day suspension is automatic.
What happens if you ignore the ticket
You’ve got 30 days from the ticket date to pay or respond — miss it, and the court rules without you. That means an automatic conviction, fine and demerit points applied, and no more shot at an Early Resolution meeting or trial. Undoing that later is possible in limited situations, but it’s far from guaranteed.
Why it's worth doing before you pay

Scarborough's court process
Scarborough traffic matters are heard at 1530 Markham Road, a separate Provincial Offences Court from Toronto’s main downtown location. If your ticket came from a red light or speed camera, note that as of January 20, 2025, those matters no longer go through Provincial Offences Court at all — they’re handled through the city’s administrative penalty system instead, decided by hearing officers rather than a judge. Officer-issued tickets still follow the standard court process at Markham Road.
