racing & stunt driving
A Stunt Driving charge which is commonly identified as “racing” is mostly issued when a driver of a motor vehicle is caught travelling 50 km or more above posted speed limit. You do not necessarily have to be racing another vehicle in order to be charged with stunt driving. You may also be charged with this offence if you are caught trying to perform a stunt such as drifting or squealing your tires.
Once charged with Stunt Driving you will immediately be issued a 7 day roadside suspension of your drivers licence as well as the vehicle will be impounded for 7 days at your own expense. The ticket given to you will provide you with a specific date for you to appear in court. If convicted of this offence your insurance may be affected for up to three years or more. Even one conviction for Stunt Driving will result in a drastic increase to your insurance rate. Some insurance companies may not even insure you if convicted.
Penalties associated with stunt driving are listed below:
• 6 demerit points
• Fine between $2,000-$10,000
• Possible suspension of licence for a period of no more than 2 years
• Possible term of imprisonment for up to six months
• Conviction will remain on your record for 3 years from the date of offence
